Mission Statement
The aim of the Sainik Schools is to prepare boys academically, physically and mentally for the National Defence Academy, Khadakavasala (Pune) and other walks of life. The other objectives are : To develop qualities of body, mind and charact
er which will enable the young boys to become good and useful citizens.
Good conduct, sound character, team spirit, dedication to purpose, patriotic outlook and desire to serve the country with efficiency are the qualities sought to be promoted by these schools.
The Head –
The Principal is the administrative and academic head of the institute. Defence Officers of the rank of Colonel in the Army or equivalent from other services is appointed as Principal by Ministry of Defence, New Delhi. He is assisted by service officers who are appointed as Head Master for academic section and a Registrar for Administrative section.
Background –

Sainik School Bijapur was the 13th School to be setup in the chain of 20 Sainik School existing today in the country. The foundation stone was laid by late Smt Indira Gandhi, the then AICC President, and the school started functioning on 16th September 1963 in Vijaya College Campus, Bijapur. The present campus was inaugurated by the then Vice President of India late Dr. Zakir Hussain on 17th December 1966.

STUDENTS IN THE CLASS ROOM
Campus –
This school is located in the historical city of Bijapur, famous for Golgumbaz and other ancient monuments. It has a campus spread over 406 acres, with extensive playgrounds, swimming pool, gymnasium, and well equipped laboratories, auditorium, equitation section, computer labs, Language laboratory and a library. The cadets are accommodated in one of the six houses of the school i.e. Hoysala, Adilshahi, Vijaynagar, Wodeyar, chalukya and Rashtrakoota. These houses are named after the famous dynasties of Karnataka State. The school has a branch of State Bank of India which caters for the needs of staff and students. The school has MI Room consisting of medical unit of eight beds and isolation unit of four beds. It also has a part-time Medical Officer who is assisted by a qualified Medical Assistant. The doctor attends the daily sick-parade of cadets and conducts periodical checks of all cadets. They are treated for minor ailments in the school MI Room. Serious cases as well as those needing special medical care are admitted to the district hospital or one of the two medical colleges in the city.

Atmosphere –
The school has an auditorium with the capacity of around 700. Amongst other school activities film shows are also organised for the boys as part of their training-cum-recreation. It is also used for school assembly and entertainment. The school has a well equipped library to cater to the varied interests of the students and staff of the school. All boys dine together in a common dining hall. The cooking arrangements are supervised by Mess Manager. A mess committee with representatives of the staff and boys as members meets regularly to prepare the menu. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are prepared distinctly and served according to the choice of the boys

The Teaching Staff –
The school has well qualified and experienced staff. In addition, two PTI’s from the Army Physical Training Corps (APTC) and three NCC staff (01 JCO and 02 Hav) are on deputation from the Army.

The maximum strength of the school is 620. Each boy’s work is supervised by masters apart from the Housemasters and Tutors who keep an eye on their progress. Each boy has a Class Master who advises and helps him in his academic work.

Sports –

The school provides facilities for major games like volleyball, basketball, football and hockey. Facilities for other games like cricket and table tennis are also provided. The school has a well equipped gymnasium, indoor badminton court and a swimming pool. Coaching classes are conducted by qualified coaches in major games. The school has an obstacle course to improve the students endurance and physique. It is compulsory and all boys take part in regular physical training which includes cross country runs. The school also has set up individual obstacle course and GTO task course for SSB training.

Extra curricular activities –

While greater emphasis is laid on the academic progress of the boys, the school provides ample scope for the development of their creative faculties and skills in fine arts & crafts and other hobbies. National Cadet Corps-

All the students are cadets of the Junior Division Senior Division of the National Cadets Corps. The senior boys attend Annual Training Camps and Special Summer Camps. The school also arranges educational tours under escorts to places of historical and educational interest as a regular feature of their training. There is also ample opportunity for varied adventure activities during the course of their stay at school.

Fee –

The fee structure from the academic year 1999-2000 was as follows : Rs. 29,282/- Tuition Fees per cadet per annum. Rs. 1,500/- Clothing Charges per cadet per annum during the first year and Rs. 750/- in the subsequent years. Rs. 8,437/- Messing/Diet Charges per boy per annum.

A GAME OF HOCKEY IN PROGRESS

Admission –

Admission is open to class VI for boys who have completed 10 but below 11 years of age and to class IX for boys who have completed 13 but below 14 years of age on 1st July of the year of admission. Admissions are made on the basis of an All India Entrance Examination which consists of three written papers for class VI and four written papers for class IX. Boys who qualify in the written examination and are high in the merit list will be called for viva-voce/interview and medical examination depending upon the number of vacancies and scholarships available. Interview marks will be added to the marks of the written tests and final merit list will prepared for admission to the school strictly according to their rank/position in the merit, subject to their being declared medically fit by the competent medical board/authorities as per the medical standards laid down. 15% of the total seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste and 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribes. 25% seats are also reserved for children of service personnel including ex-servicemen

A CADET IN SCHOOL UNIFORM

Management –

The administration of the school is vested in an autonomous board of Governors under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister of Defence. The Chief Minister or Education Minister of the States are members of the Board of Governors. There is a Local Board of Administration for each school with a Senior Defence Service Officer as its Chairman. The Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarters Training Command, I A F, Bangalore or his nominee of the rank of Air Vice Marshal functions as the Chairman of the Local Board of Administration. Presently the Senior Officer-in-Charge of Administration is the Chairman of the Local Board of Administration.

The Ajeets-

The Ajeets-Sainik School, Bijapur has a very strong force of nearly 3500 alumni association members called the Ajeets. It is a practice for the Ajeets to meet once in a year in a pre- decided place for an interaction between the ex-students. The last meet was held in the School campus in January 05. Many of the students are in defence and civil service serving the nation in different capacities.

How to get there –

Bijapur, is situated 98 kms south of Solapur on National Highway no 13 and 225 kms North East of Belgaum. It is also connected by train from Solapur.
